PBS Building Managing Director, Adam Moore shares his leadership framework for growing future leaders

Adam Moore is one of the Australian construction sector’s rare individuals who combines hands-on craftsman’s skills with tertiary qualifications that cover property economics and materials science. He started his working life as a chippie and concurrently worked to attain a bachelor’s degree in construction management. However, it’s the former experience he credits as providing him with many of the ‘life’ tools that he now wields every day as the co-owner and managing director of PBS Property Group where he leads a team of 200 across three states.

Even as a second-year carpentry apprentice, a young Adam discovered an appetite for responsibility, planning and ongoing learning that have been hallmarks of his career ever since. Yet he didn’t identify these as burgeoning ‘leadership’ skills at the time.

It wasn’t until years later while working as a project manager in London that his then-boss helped join the dots when he told him that although Adam had been working for him for the past two years, it should have been the other way around.

This started Adam on the mindset transition from craftsman to business leader. By day, he was overseeing multi-million-dollar construction projects for diverse clientele that included Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co and Qantas among others. By night, he was reading about leadership and more critically analysing his own management of people.

Today, Adam is known for his commitment to growing his people’s potential. He measures leadership success as the point at which his team members put him out of a job.
